Israeli Ambassador Taub goes to Bradford after MP’s Anti-Israel Remarks

Daniel Taub, in his capacity as the Israeli Ambassador to the United Kingdom, went to the British city of Bradford on Monday accompanied by strong security. His visit comes after Bradford West MP George Galloway said in a speech that the city’s residents want it to be an “Israel-free zone.”

More specifically, Galloway said that Bradford’s residents don’t want anything to do with Jewish visitors, products, scholars, and more. He also went on to denigrate Israel as a whole, calling it “savage.”

In response to Galloway’s anti-Semitic comments, people erupted in anger on social media, and British police have started a probe against him. Read more: Daniel Taub | Ideamench and Daniel Taub | Wikipedia

In the week prior to Taub’s visit, a pro-Israel video was distributed by activists to dispute Galloway’s claims about the city being solidly anti-Semitic.

In turn, Daniel Taub said that he was visiting in response to several invitations by residents of the city. In comments to the Telegraph & Argus (Bradford’s daily newspaper), Taub also said that based on this trip that the city’s citizens were more accepting than the way Galloway had portrayed them in his speech, and that the MP did not speak for them.

He also stated that the city was an example of how people from diverse backgrounds can coexist, and that the city had a “long history of cooperation” with Israel. Further, Taub said that he planned to meet members of various groups in the city, including religious leaders among others.

Speaking to the newspaper further, Taub said that he wanted Galloway to help improve the future for everyone who lived in Bradford, and to not be a person who would do otherwise.

The MP’s speech is only the most recent example of his anti-Semitic statements.

In the past, Galloway has attacked Israel by stating on record that he believed that the country had not only purposely caused unrest in the Ukraine but that it had also provided weapons to Al Qaeda; he has subsequently denied making these statements. There are other instances of him making strange and insulting claims about Israel on record as well.

Further, Galloway has publicly stated that he would not debate people from Israel, which he said as he abruptly pulled out of a scheduled debate with a person from that country on one occasion.
